Talking Biz: Couple's business is all wet The Daily News By Evan Caldwell May 01, 2006 Like the waterfalls and streams Pam and Joe Merkwan create, the couple's business is constantly on the move. The Merkwans, who own and operate Aqua Pro Designs out of Rainier, travel to people's homes to design and build water features --- such as ponds, streams and waterfalls. "We want to make what we do look as natural as possible, like it has always been there," Joe Merkwan said. "I love being creative and each job we never make the same thing, so it's always unique." The Merkwans started a landscaping business in 1999, but they changed course in 2003 to offer water landscaping. Now, they will focus exclusively on building water features. Now, Aqua Pro Designs serves Columbia and Cowlitz counties. "A lot of people don't have something to help you relax," Pam Merkwan said. "But the water's noise and movement is very peaceful." Across the nation, water gardens are becoming more popular, with aquatic pond plant sales steadily increasing throughout the past five years, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Merkwans' Aqua Pro Designs will be at the Cowlitz County Home & Garden Show at the county Expo Center in Longview on May 6 and 7.
