WHAT’S NEW! Can you believe that the holidays are rapidly approaching. Thanksgiving is next week and Christmas is soon to follow. Wow! Our gift room is decorated in all its holiday glory. We have a great selection of ornaments, knick-knacks and other gift items for your holiday shopping. Oh yeah, before we forget to mention it: HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Talking about Thanksgiving, we have or will have some great hostess gifts. Our poinsettias come in next Tuesday (the 22nd), and our wreaths and cut greens are scheduled to come in that week as well. We have not received an official ETA for our wreath delivery…but hopefully it will be before Thanksgiving (keep your fingers crossed). Our “living” Christmas trees will be coming in at the end of this week. We will have noble firs, Fraser firs, grand firs, Douglas firs, blue spruce as well as other cool conifers. Remember though, it is only recommended that you have your “living” Christmas tree inside the house for 3-5 days (see our handout on Living Christmas Trees). You could purchase a “living” Christmas tree and place it outside on a deck, patio or outside the front door and decorate it. Add some lights, string some popcorn, peanuts and cranberries, add some sliced oranges and you have made a great garland that the birds will really enjoy. Some other ideas for decorating an outside tree: Get some beautiful pinecones (available at the nursery) and tie some outdoor ribbons on them and hang them on your tree. Or roll pinecones in peanut butter, then in birdseed. Wrap some wire around the base of the cone and attach this treat to the tree. Another idea is to string clusters of whole, raw unsalted peanuts that are still in the shell onto strings of raffia. Pierce two or three peanuts and tie the raffia loosely on the branches. String a few kernels of popcorn on raffia, than roll them in peanut butter and birdseed (a favorite of blue jays). Cut mesh onion bags into small squares (mesh netting is also available at fabric stores) and fill with sunflower seeds. Tie the bundles with raffia and hang them from the tree. Things to remember: make strings of fruit, nuts and popcorn short. Long strings are difficult for little beaks and claws to handle. Tie the raffia loosely so that the critters can pull the snack away from the garland to eat in peace. Just a few more ideas…so bear with us. Try a bagel bird delight. Split a bagel in half and make a hanger by tying raffia, ribbon or jute through the hole. Spread peanut butter onto the outside area and dip in birdseed.

Cookie cutter birdfeeders: Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes in dried toast. Then cover with peanut butter and birdseed. Make a hole to tie a piece of raffia through and hang it on the tree. Large cookie cutters are best. Okay, okay….just one more. Take an old pie pan or cookie sheet with sides. Place some birdseed, sunflower seeds (shelled) in the pan. Melt some suet or lard and pour over seeds. Once it hardens (try putting in the refrigerator) you can cut out shapes with a cookie cutter. Put a hole in the top and hang from your tree. This can be a fun project for the whole family. Stop by the nursery and see our outdoor tree for some examples of the above projects. NEW ARRIVALS Now for some other tidbits from the nursery. We just received a beautiful load of dwarf and specialty conifers. Their colors range from green to blue to yellow and even some green that have been frosted white. We received a mugho pine called “Pot o Gold.” Talk about a mugho pine with pizzaz. It has the most gorgeous winter color (I am a suck for plants with yellow foliage). And the weeping noble fir with it blue color is luscious. And of course there are too many others to mention. The list goes on and on. So…we think you need to visit us! Check out the new conifers, the “living” Christmas trees, wreaths, poinsettias and our selection of Christmas ornaments and gift items. You might just possible get a good start on your holiday shopping or maybe even finish. Remember, gifts certificates make a wonderful gift. CALENDAR OF EVENTS
